Life Insurance With High Blood Pressure in Alabama

Controlled hypertension rarely costs you much — if the application is presented correctly. Here's how to do that.

Life Insurance With High Blood Pressure in Alabama

High blood pressure is the single most common condition on the applications we write in Northern Alabama. It is also the most over-worried about.

The short version

If your blood pressure is controlled — on medication or not — most carriers will still offer you their best or near-best rate class. Being treated is a positive signal to an underwriter. Being untreated and uncontrolled is the risk.

What actually moves your rate

  • Readings consistently above 150/95
  • Three or more medications to reach control
  • Hypertension plus diabetes, sleep apnea, or elevated weight
  • Any cardiac event history — heart attack, stent, arrhythmia

Two things to do before your exam

1. Schedule the paramed exam for the morning, before caffeine, and after a normal night's sleep. 2. Ask your physician for your last few office readings. If your exam-day number is an outlier, a documented history can override it.

What we do differently

As nurses, we know that a 148/92 at a kitchen table after a stressful workday isn't your real number. We build the file around your actual history and send it to carriers that underwrite hypertension generously.

Frequently asked questions

Does high blood pressure raise life insurance rates?
Usually only slightly, and often not at all if it is controlled on medication with readings consistently under about 140/90.
Should I mention my blood pressure medication?
Always. Carriers pull prescription histories. Undisclosed medication looks like concealment and can void a claim.
Can I get coverage without a medical exam?
Yes. Many carriers offer no-exam term and final expense policies where controlled hypertension is fully acceptable.
