Life Insurance With Diabetes in Alabama: What Actually Matters
A1C, medications, and complications — here's how underwriters really read a diabetic chart, and how Alabama families still get good rates.

Almost every week, someone in Huntsville or Decatur tells us they were "told they couldn't get life insurance" because of diabetes. Almost every week, we place a policy for them anyway.
Here's what actually happens when an underwriter reads a diabetic file — from a nurse who reads the same charts.
What underwriters look at (in order)
- Type and age at diagnosis. Type 2 diagnosed at 52 is read very differently from type 1 diagnosed at 12.
- A1C trend, not one number. A single 8.1 with three years of 6.7s behind it is a very different story than a climbing pattern.
- Complications. Neuropathy, retinopathy, and kidney involvement move the needle more than any lab value.
- Everything else in the chart. Blood pressure, weight, tobacco, and cardiac history compound with diabetes.
What most agents get wrong
They send your application to one carrier. Carriers differ enormously on diabetes. The same 61-year-old in Athens with an A1C of 7.4 might be rated Table 4 at one carrier and Standard at another — a difference of hundreds of dollars a year for identical coverage.
Realistic outcomes we see
- Well-controlled type 2, no complications: often Standard or Standard Plus term coverage.
- Moderate control, some medication changes: a mild table rating, or a simplified-issue policy with no exam.
- Insulin-dependent with complications: final expense or guaranteed-issue whole life, with real coverage in place quickly.
Before you apply, do these three things
1. Pull your last two or three A1C results so we can present a trend, not a snapshot. 2. List your medications and doses exactly — guessing hurts you at underwriting. 3. Don't apply anywhere until we've matched your profile to the right carrier. A decline stays on record and follows you.
The nurse advantage
We read your chart before the underwriter does. That's the whole difference. We know what a well-managed diabetic file looks like, and we know how to present it.

Frequently asked questions
- Can you get life insurance with type 2 diabetes?
- Yes. Most people with well-controlled type 2 diabetes qualify for standard or slightly rated coverage. Control and consistency matter far more than the diagnosis itself.
- Does an A1C over 7 disqualify you?
- No. Many carriers accept an A1C in the 7s, especially with no complications. Some carriers are much friendlier than others, which is why shopping multiple carriers matters.
- Does insulin use raise your rate?
- It can, but insulin alone is not a decline. Age at diagnosis, complications, and control history usually drive the rate more than the medication.
